Abstract:
In this text we will focus on the aesthetic essence of the graphic novels as a type of multimodal literature. Specifically, we will try to synthesize the basic features of multimodality and multiliteracy as modern forms of reading in the so called postGuttembergian screen-centric culture. Through the elaboration of the structure of the graphic novel as a multimodal literature per se, we will try to highlight the similarities and differences of the graphic novels vs comic books in general and to evaluate the graphic novels through the prism of the so-called intermediate art. Specifically, art where the ancient compulsion for interference between images and words is realized.

Keywords: graphic novel, comics, multimodal literature, intermediality, multimodality
